Iyad Abumoghli is a distinguished international leader in environmental diplomacy, sustainable development, and cross-sector collaboration. Over a career spanning more than three decades with the United Nations and allied global institutions, he has worked at the intersection of environmental policy, economic development, and peacebuilding.
He has held senior leadership roles with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), including as Regional Director of the West Asia Office and Special Representative of the Executive Director, where he advanced multilateral partnerships among governments, civil society, business, and faith-based organizations.
Later, he served as Director of the Faith for Earth Coalition, and played a central role in shaping global approaches to ethics and moral responsibility for climate resilience, and environmentally ethical investment and governance.
Now retired from the UN, Mr. Abumoghli is sought after for senior volunteer roles in numerous global interfaith and environment related not-for-profit organizations. He is the founder of the Al-Mizaan Foundation, which promotes ethical finance, ecological responsibility, and stewardship rooted in Islamic values, bridging faith traditions with modern sustainability practice.
In joining the URI’s Strategic Advisory Council, Iyad brings a rare combination of global policy expertise, moral leadership, and deep interfaith fluency.
